Task I: Class Competition Identifying the Bill of Rights! Each group will serve as a team of lawyers. You will be provided with the only document you will need (a summary of the bill of rights and your notes from yesterday). I will display a series of scenarios where someone’s constitutional rights are being violated!(OH NO!). For each scenario, you will have 3 minutes to figure out which constitutional amendment(s) are being violated. In some situations, multiple amendments are being violated. In others, none. The winning team will be given a prize :) |

Time to Explore Other Amendments...
| So now you are a pro regarding the 10 first Amendments of the Constitution that make up our Bill of Rights! But what about the other Amendments/ changes to the Constitution?! Why do we have them and why are they important?! Before we get started on dissecting these other amendments, I'll need you to work with your group to take a literacy test (a test that tells if you can read)- you have 10 Minutes... GO! |
Did the literacy test you just took seem fair? You may be asking yourself why someone would create such a test. Sometimes in Civics we will speak about how history has been corrected- which means at one point what some people were doing was wrong. Tests like these were once given to keep people from voting! But before we even get to voting, there were times where people were treated unfairly in general as human beings. Your job is to analyze the sources provided to the right to hypothesize what you think the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendment each did. Create a New Chart (like your Bill of Rights one) and title it "Some More Important Amendments". Add the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to this list. |
* Some of these resources contain slang terms, we need to understand that at that point in history people still found such terms acceptable to use. In our class we are expected to handle this maturely and realize they are part of a not so positive point in history. |

After what you learned today, it may not come as a surprise that not everyone has always had the right to vote/suffrage. If you were not a white, land owning male at one point you would not have been allowed to vote! On Friday we will look closely at Amendments 15, 19, 24 & 26 (our Voting Rights Amendments!)
