You have successfully completed our unit on the American Legal System and some very important Supreme Court cases. During this new Unit we will focus on the home front and ourselves. That's right, we'll be talking FLORIDA and OUR local government! To start, let’s take a look at our learning goal and scale to the right AND some of the key vocabulary words for our upcoming unit. | Learning Goal: Students will be able to compare the structure of the Federal and State governments (Constitutions, lawmaking process, obligations and services).

Task I: Video - Venn Diagram Review! We briefly discussed Federalism during the 2nd quarter while we were learning about the different parts of the Constitution. Article VI in the Constitution, along with Amendment 10, establishes a system where the Federal government and the states have their own powers as well as powers they share. Create a Venn Diagram (or use the one provided to you) with the headings you see below. Then, watch the video to the right and list examples of the powers in each category. |

Task II: Federalism Reading & Presentation To the right you will find two files - a reading from iCivics and a presentation created by the FLREA. Both cover the major ideas behind "Federalism." You have hard copies of the reading on your desks to review first than may use the class computer to view the PowerPoint. Your job is to complete the graphic organizer below that I will provide for you and keep it somewhere safe for this unit. |

Homework: 1.) Complete Chapter 13 in your Work Book by Friday 2/28/15 2.) Power Play! In Power Play, you’ll coach a team of players competing to win power for state or federal government. Teammates will offer arguments that, if persuasive, will pull power statues toward the side you’ve chosen. But use your players wisely — the wrong argument will make a player fall or even move the power toward the other side >>>>> Click Here to Play <<<<<<< |
