At the start of the year, we discussed the importance of the rule of law - the idea that NO ONE is above the law. As the year went on, we investigated how laws are created and who is in charge of enforcing them and making sure everyone follows them accordingly. Now we sit, studying how the courts work BUT we need to know what types of laws we are expected to follow AND where they come from. Today we have a busy day! We will start at the very beginning so you do not feel lost- You will begin by learning what some of basic types of laws in our country are. |

Task I: Become a Legal Eagle - Types of Law Around the room you will find postings to key bits of information about various types of laws. You will have 7 minutes at each station to access the information and take down some vital notes. I suggest making a simple chart like the one displayed on the whiteboard (types of law on one side, notes on the other). It is YOUR personal job to become an expert on these types of law so you can accomplish the rest of your tasks today. Good luck and let's become "legal eagles!" |
Task II: Prove What You Know - Types of Law PicCollage Now that you have become semi-experts on civil, criminal, military and Constitutional law - you are going to be working with your shoulder partner to create a PicCollage which describes each of them. Task III: What About the Real World? Now that you have a really solid understanding of WHAT these types of laws are, Mrs. Furgi wants you to apply this knowledge to the real world! Below you will find links to some recent news articles. With your shoulder partners/teammates, download the articles and briefly skim them to get an understanding of what the story is about. Then, try to decipher what type (or types) of laws these articles are related too. In your writing journals, write the article number AND a sentence or two explaining what type of law is being covered in the news story.
